We're looking to hire a few good .NET developers. Instead of the traditional way of sending in CVs (resumes), I figured we can do this Web 2.5 style. Resumes are so 20th century and Web 1.0. What can we learn about you with just a resume?

Below are 10 things I want you to send me: some easy, some hard, some fun, some coding challenges. There are no right or wrong answers this is just a way for us to get to know you. Some questions will take you 5 seconds, some may take you 5 minutes, and at least one will take you an hour (#7, but it is fun). I am looking for what drives you, where you want to go, and of course your approach to problems and how you craft a solution. For the coding questions, good coders are easy to find, I am looking for a coder who in creative (one guy once solved a TSQL problem better than the actual official solution and now I use his answer as the new solution) but also through. (Hint: check your own work a gizillion different ways, I have gotten compile errors back in the past!) I am also looking for some who takes pride in their work and goes the extra mile (or kilometer). (Hint: things like good Unit tests also give you bonus points.) After we get to know each other via this process, then I will look at your CV and we can do the traditional interview.

1. Send me a link to you online. Your web page, blog, MySpace profile, user group you are a member of, or a site that you worked on. Anything to get me acquainted with you. If you are reading this blog you already know me, so it is only fair. :)

2. List your top 5 values. (Why do you get out of bed in the morning? What makes you tick?)

3. List the top 3 blogs that you read and tell me why.

4. Tell me what programming language you want to learn next and why.

5. List the top 3 new features you want to see in the next version of the .NET framework (4.0) that has not been announced and tell me why you want to see them.

6. Write a short essay on the greatest failure (canceled or late project, bad code breaking the build the night before a major demo, etc) in your professional career.

7. Listen to this podcast. Reflect on it and give me your reaction to it.

8. Send me an ASP.NET project from Northwind that uses the Model View Controller design pattern. (Not the ASP .NET MVC framework.) Use the categories, products, and sales. Be creative. Bonus points if it is real easy to install.

9. A TSQL Challenge. Give me a script to solve the following problem. (Run this setup here.) There are no real wrong answers, but the more efficient and bulletproof the query is the better. No cheating and no cursors! Don't Google the answers (we'll know.) Assign rooms to classes based on capacity using the Classes and Rooms tables. Rules: each class should have a room (and NULL if a room is not available). No class can be in a room where there are more students than capacity. No room can be used twice.

The results of your SQL statement should be something like this:

10. Create a data driven ASP.NET page using the Telerik controls. Tell me something that sucks about the control you used. (I already know what is great about them.) Bonus if you find a bug. (We'll send you a .NET Ninja tee shirt if you do.)

Display Google Talk Presence

If you wanted to post your Google Talk ID on a site and display an icon that shows your status, it's quite easy. Google offers a chatback feature for anonymous conversations with the visitors of a site and this feature has been recently updated with more ways to display the badge.

To get your presence icon, go to the badge generation page, select "Hyperlink and status icon (no frame)" from the list of styles, click on "Update badge" and copy the code in a text editor. You should identify a URL that looks like this (the bold part could be removed to simplify the address):

This image could be displayed next to your Google Talk username to show whether you are available for chat. Obviously, if you like the chatback feature, you could add the entire code generated by Google.

Bomba gibi bir haber... Türkiye'ye geldiğinden beri bir numarasını göremediğimiz Vodafone herhalde bombayı böyle patlatıyor. Merakla bekliyoruz!

During November of last year, we reported that Vodafone might be one of the first carriers to offer the 3G version of Apple’s iPhone to their customers across the world by this year’s spring. Today, we are glad to say that we haven’t been let down by our sources, and official word from Vodafone confirms that they will indeed start selling Apple’s iPhone later this year.

In an announcement made by Vodafone, it is said that they have signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in up to ten markets around the world.

It isn’t made clear whether the Vodafone’s version of the Apple iPhone will have support for 3G/UMTS networks, but at least they identified the ten markets that they are going to sell this much-awaited device in later this year. These are Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey.

So yes, if you’re located in any of the ten places that I just enumerated, it is time to rejoice. 3G iPhone or not, at least you’re getting it, which is a step in the right direction.

Google Reader durmadan gelişiyor ve artık öyle cool özellikler ortaya koymaya başladı ki insan gün geçtikçe daha da bağlanıyor.

Have you ever wanted to share something that you were reading, but you didn't want to go through the hassle of subscribing to a whole feed for a single interesting article? And what about sharing content from sites with no feeds? There you are, reading along, and you think to yourself, "If only everything on the web had a 'Share' button like in Google Reader!"

As it turns out, there's all sorts of information "out there" just waiting to be streamed, shared and otherwise consumed by you and your friends. Now you can finally show all of your Reader friends that awesome talking cat video you found, your favorite grilled trout recipe, or reviews of the best brunch place in your neighborhood -- all without a subscription.

Here are a few new ways you can add and share interesting things in Reader:

Share anything with a bookmarklet - Just drag this link from the Notes page up to your browser's bookmark bar and click, click, click your way to easy, no-subscription sharing in Reader. You can share any content from any web page, even if the site doesn't have a feed. For even more control over what gets shared, select some text from the page before clicking the "Note in Reader" bookmarklet and your selection will appear as the item's body. There's also a space for you to add an editorial note when you need to let your friends know why you are sharing something. You can always uncheck "Add to shared items" if you want to add something to Reader without also adding it to your shared items.

Share items with a note - If you are like me, you might want to share something in Reader, but think your friends might not "get" why you are sharing it. Use the "Share with note" button on the item toolbar to create a copy of that item with your own note attached to it. Now your friends won't have to wonder if the B-movie about an evil floor lamp you shared was intended to be funny, sarcastic, ironic or the real motivation behind your next movie night.

Add a note - Do you ever get the urge to just share a thought with your friends without attaching it to any particular item? Now, you can let your friends know whatever pops into your head (for better or for worse) by typing anything into the text box at the top of the Notes page.

We have also added a few other small features to make your sharing even more awesome! Add a little personality to your public shared items page by choosing from three new styles from your shared items page.

Finally, we've changed the list view to highlight when an item is being shared by a friend, as opposed to through your normal subscriptions.

I hope you like these new sharing features as much as I do, because I'm always on the lookout for even more ways to share cool things with my friends! As always, much of our feature development is in response to feedback that we get in our discussion group, and a number of other sources -- so please keep it coming!

Monitor Google's Homepage with Page2RSS

Page2RSS is a very nice service that creates feeds from any web page, by including the new content and linking to a page that highlights the differences.

A simple example of web page that could be monitored using Page2RSS is google.com: a homepage that rarely changes only to celebrate important events or to announce new Google features. You could subscribe to the automatically-generated feed by visiting: http://page2rss.com/page?url=www.google.com/. This also works for international sites like Google Japan, Google Italy etc. Unfortunately, you'll also receive an update when Google puts the classic logo back.

Of course, the service is useful for any web page that doesn't offer feeds, but it's better suited for web pages that don't change very frequently since Page2RSS checks to see if there's new content every 4 hours. You could use it to generate feeds for changelogs, privacy policies, news sites, Google Labs or to find new features in Google's services, like Hindi support added to Google Translate on April 29. Can you find other interesting web pages that could be monitored using Page2RSS?

Is a Picture Really Worth a Thousand Words?

People say pictures are worth a thousand words, and some industry experts even argue that you should always have them — the bigger, the more friendly, the better. But whenever you hear someone say "always," that's your first clue to test that claim (if for no other reason than to become a website-design myth-buster). We came across an interesting case study from WiderFunnel Marketing, one of our Website Optimizer Authorized Consultants, that illustrates this very point.

WiderFunnel's client, Safe Software, wanted to maximize the number of people downloading a trial version of their software application. They sought to make the Trial Version Download Page more effective by getting more visitors to click on the download button. Here was the original version of the page:

The website owner had meant to update this page for some time. Working with Safe Software, WiderFunnel developed two alternate versions of the page which they envisioned to be more modern and visually appealing. One version had a big picture of a smiling model, a number of points outlining the benefits of the software, and a clear call to action. The other version maintained the distinct call to action, but removed the picture and benefits points.

The team at Safe Software wasn't sure which of these versions (original, version 1, or version 2) would lead to the most conversions. If you're an avid reader of online marketing best-practices literature, you might predict that the version with the picture and benefits would outperform the others. After all, aren't pictures and useful information always good things to show to visitors? What's noteworthy is that the winning page was actually version 1: no picture and not as many supporting arguments. Even more surprising is that the original page outperformed version 2!

After the fact, we might hypothesize that the preceding pages did all the selling and that at that point, visitors just wanted to get their hands on the application. Perhaps the image distracted visitors, or perhaps some of the supporting arguments raised more questions than answers.

What's certain, though, is that the winning version led to a 15% increase in conversions. These results go to show you that what you (or 'the industry') think works best often doesn't, and you never know until you test it.

The Informational Distance Between Cities

Information Aesthetics points to an interesting visualization of the "informational" relation between cities. Two cities are "informationally" related if they are often mentioned together, so the visualization uses the number of Google results to approximate the distance:

Gdistance(w₁,w₂) = (#(w₁)+#(w₂)) / (#(w₁+" and "+w₂)+#(w₂+" and "+w₁)),
where #(w) is the number of Google search results for the query w enclosed in quotes.

This approximation could be improved by replacing "and" with "*", so that the words aren't necessarily separated by the conjunction "and". The Google distance is multiplied with the physical distance between cities to increase the connection between cities that are far away.

Among the cities that have a small "informational" distance: London and New York, Tokio and Sydney, London and Singapore City.

Another way you can use the number of Google results is to calculate the mindshare of a word or name within a domain. If you divide the number of search results for [nokia mobile phone] by the number of results for [mobile phone] you can find Nokia's Googleshare within the mobile space.

Kai-Fu Lee on Cloud Computing

John Breslin highlights some interesting ideas from Kai-Fu Lee's keynote about cloud competing presented at the 17th International World Wide Web Conference (Kai-Fu Lee is the president of Google China from July 2005). He mentions six properties of cloud computing from Google's perspective:

1. User centric. "If data is all stored in the Cloud - images, messages, whatever - once you're connected to the Cloud, any new PC or mobile device that can access your data becomes yours. Not only is the data yours, but you can share it with others."

2. Task centric. "The applications of the past - spreadsheets, e-mail, calendar - are becoming modules, and can be composed and laid out in a task-specific manner. (...) Google considers communication to be a task" and that's the reason why Gmail integrates a chat feature for instant communication.

3. Powerful. "Having lots of computers in the Cloud means that it can do things that your PC cannot do. For example, Google Search is faster than searching in Windows or Outlook or Word" because a Google query hits at least 1000 machines.

4. Accessible. Having your data in the cloud means you can instantly get more information from different repositories - Google's universal search is one example of simultaneous search. "Traditional web page search does IR / TF-IDF / page rank stuff pretty well on the Web at large, but if you want to do a specific type of search, for restaurants, images, etc., web search isn't necessarily the best option. It's difficult for most people to get to the right vertical search page in the first place, since they usually can't remember where to go. Universal search is basically a single search that will access all of these vertical searches."

5. Intelligent. "Data mining and massive data analysis are required to give some intelligence to the masses of data available (massive data storage + massive data analysis = Google Intelligence)."

6. Programmable. "For fault tolerance, Google uses GFS or distributed disk storage. Every piece of data is replicated three times. If one machine dies, a master redistributes the data to a new server. There are around 200 clusters (some with over 5 PB of disk space on 500 machines). The Big Table is used for distributed memory. The largest cells in the Big Table are 700 TB, spread over 2000 machines. MapReduce is the solution for new programming paradigms. It cuts a trillion records into a thousand parts on a thousand machines. Each machine will then load a billion records and will run the same program over these records, and then the results are recombined. While in 2005, there were some 72,000 jobs being run on MapReduce, in 2007, there were two million jobs (use seems to be increasing exponentially)." This recent video has more information about Google's infrastructure.

Kai-Fu Lee thinks that outsourcing IT to a "trusted shop" like Google is the key to make using a computer simple and safe. "Entrepreneurs should have new opportunities with this paradigm shift, being freed from monopoly-dominated markets as more cloud-based companies evolve that are powered by open technologies."

There's a shift from the computer to the user, from applications to tasks, from isolated data to data that can be accessed anywhere and shared with anyone.

"Cloud computing liberates the user from having to remember where the data is, enables the user to access information anywhere once created, and makes services fast and powerful through essentially infinite information and computing. People are using cloud services to find, share, create, and organize information. People are also using cloud services to shop, bank, communicate, socialize. By using cloud computing, these capabilities will be accessible not only on PCs but also telephones, automobiles, televisions, and appliances. (...) Google is committed to help bring about the era of cloud computing, which we believe will facilitate services that are convenient, easy-to-learn, people-centric, scalable, and device-ready," mentions Kai-Fu Lee in the abstract.

Nokia expands XpressMusic line with two new devices: Nokia 5320 XpressMusic and Nokia 5220 XpressMusic

Never satisfied with its own success just like any other company who thrives on innovation, Nokia released two new models to complement its music line today, calling the new devices Nokia 5220 XpressMusic and Nokia 5320 XpressMusic. Both phones will have great features for convenience and portability with the user in mind, as always, with special attention given to hardcore music lovers.

First, the new Nokia 5320 XpressMusic phone (pictured left) will come with 3G network support, and as you can see from the image it has a secondary camera up-front for your video calling needs. We call it secondary because there is a main camera located at the back side, capable of taking 3.2 megapixel snaps, which are complemented by the built-in dual-LED flash.

Looking at the navigation controls at the top of the numeric keypad, we see a little Nokia swirly Menu key, which means that this device is going to run on the ever-popular and always open (to new features) Symbian UI on Series 60 OS like many high-end Nokia phones. It will also feature a new voice-controlled Say and Play feature, which lets you do wonders with your music. Just say the name of the song and the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic will play it for you, without needing for you to press any other buttons.

The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic phone, according to Nokia, will also be ready for N-gage because of its support for HSDPA. This phone seems to be about speed and performance, as it is also HS-USB compatible enabling high speed data transfer, and has support for up to 8GB memory cards. The list of notable features doesn’t stop there though, because it also has a full featured Internet browser, access to Nokia’s Ovi and Nokia Search 4.1.

The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic phone, on the other hand, looks like it will be another low-end, budget phone, but with pretty interesting features nonetheless. Other than having that funky new design that Nokia prefers to call symmetric, the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic phone will also have a buil-in lanyard. So does that mean Nokia thinks music lovers are clumsy and irresponsible folk who can’t even manage to hold on to their handsets?

Both of these new Nokia XpressMusic phones will serve you for up to 24 hours of music playback with their 3.5mm headphone jack and built-in semi hi-fi audio chips. Expect them to be available by Q3 2008, for 160 EUR ($255 US, 5220 XpressMusic) and 220 EUR ($350 US, 5320 XpressMusic) before taxes and subsidies.
